A cataract is clouding or opacity of the lens inside the eye.
Cataracts usually form slowly over years causing a gradual blurring of vision, which
eventually is not correctable by glasses.
A developing cataract can cause issues with glare, night vision and sometimes double vision. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts.
Other reasons you may get cataracts include the following:
If you have parents, brothers, sisters, or other family members who have cataracts
Medical problems, such as diabetes, an eye injury, eye surgery or radiation treatments on your upper.
If you have spent a lot of time in the sun, especially without sunglasses that protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays
If you have been using certain medications such as corticosteroids, which may cause early formation of cataracts.
The mainstay treatment for a cataract, is surgical removal of the cataract. A cataract can go untreated, if vision isn’t too impaired, however as vision gets more blurry, surgical removal is necessary.
