Keratoconus is a degenerative, non inflammatory disease of the eye that causes the normally spherical cornea to progressively thin and protrude, forming a "cone" shape. As a result of the irregularity of the cornea, light ends up scattering significantly , causing vision to blur.
As the condition progresses, eventually spectacles do not help.
Keratoconus can be managed with hard contact lenses. Corneal cross linking, a minimally invasive procedure that uses ultraviolet light and eye drops to strengthen the collagen fibres in the cornea, is also recommended to retard progression.
If the condition progresses to the advanced stages, where the cornea scars , a corneal transplant is then recommended.
